The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's research activities are conducted by 67 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft employs a staff of 24,000, who work with an annual research budget totaling more than 2.1 billion euros. Of this sum, more than 1.8 billion euros is generated through contract research. More than 70 percent of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. Customers and contractual partners are: Industry, Service sector, Public administration.

International collaborations with excellent research partners and innovative companies around the world ensure direct access to regions of the greatest importance to present and future scientific progress and economic development. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is engaged in a number of international activities mainly in Europe, North and South America, Asia and the MENA-Region. Fraunhofer USA, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in Rhode Island that is dedicated to the advancement of applied research and technology transfer. Fraunhofer USA was founded in 1994 to conduct applied R & D for customers from industry and state governments and the federal government in the United States.  Working closely with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s largest application-oriented research and development organization, Fraunhofer USA can offer both domestic and international resources to enhance its portfolio of R & D services. Through a vast global cooperation network, we are well positioned to be a vital part in overcoming regional and global challenges, to uncover potential research areas and support economic development.  In an international competitive environment, together with an extensive network of Fraunhofer institutes in Germany and strategic partners, we strive to strengthen transatlantic collaboration in education, applied research and innovation.

Their focus is on process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology, and technology management, and ranges from the fundamentals to the digital transformation of production.

Fraunhofer Life Science Engineering (LSE) Group

The Fraunhofer Life Sciences Engineering (LSE) Group addresses the distinctive needs and constraints at the intersection of life sciences and engineering. As a joint venture between the Fraunhofer USA CMI and the Fraunhofer IPT, we apply our multinational resources to engineer advanced solutions for biological problems. Our specialized services encompass medical instrument and device development and automation of biological & biomolecular processes.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is originally named after the esteemed Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787-1826)—a German researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur. The story of his life clearly shows why he serves as the role model for our company. 

Joseph von Fraunhofer

As a youth, Joseph von Fraunhofer worked as a glassmaking apprentice. His potential remained undeveloped until a fateful accident brought him to the attention of entrepreneur Joseph von Utzschneider. Under his tutelage, Fraunhofer studied the craft of lens grinding and worked as an optician in his workshop. Because of his skill and determination, Fraunhofer was quickly promoted to director of the Optical Institute in Benedicktbeuern. His efforts there led to improved methods of glass production. Fraunhofer also designed several optical devices that helped him conduct pioneering scientific research. Two spectral phenomena, Fraunhofer lines and Fraunhofer diffraction, were posthumously named in his honor. His invaluable contributions to science and industry earned him lasting worldwide recognition.

Joseph von Fraunhofer dedicated his life to performing research with practical utility. By adopting his name, our organization aspires to achieve the same principle.
